The irony of the phrase “living in the moment” is the ubiquity of its usage that renders it cliché, against its scarcity in social practice. This is no surprise, due to the scant cultural material that fully embodies this maxim. This project is a contribution in solidarity with those other folks out there whose work seeks to build a superstructure around mindfulness, healing, and those other values that might dismantle toxic consumer culture and bring us toward more meaningful social relationships. I’m not entirely sure what those processes may include, but this is my own attempt at providing a way forward.
This music grew out of my first attempt to create an improvising computer program that would dynamically respond to the sounds I made on the drums and yield an equal collaboration between myself and the program. Instead, something entirely different emerged.
Occasionally, my recording software would crash, and the program would no longer dynamically listen to me. Instead, the program would continuously reread the same data sent from the drums at the moment of the crash, creating endless variations that documented—in sound—that moment frozen in time. It was this experience that brought a new and unexpected meaning to the music as I heard—through musical gesture—the vast ubiquity of a single moment.
This release is the documentation of a few of these moments in their unrefined, original states. I have no way of reproducing this music: they are lost to time, just like the instances they were born from. I am merely sharing with you the moments as I experienced them.
